Baghpat
he city was originally known as ‘Vyagprastha’ - Land of Tigers (because of the population of tigers found many centuries ago. There are many versions of the story as to how the city derived it’s name. One version states that the city’s original name was ‘Vyagprasth’, while according to another version, the city has derived its name from the Hindi word ‘Vakyaprasth’, which means place of delivering speeches. Inspired by such words and versions, the city was finally named ‘BAGHPAT’ or ‘BAGPAT’ during the Mughal Era.Indian packages with Indian Travel Agent.
After the mutiny of 1857 , the city gained importance and was established as the headquaters of Tehsil Baghpat. The city was previously as small town and had a small commercial center known as the Mandi . This mandi is now more than 200 years old and was set up by Jabita Khan , son of Ruhela Chief of Najibabad ( Bijnore ) Najib Khan .
The main commercial activity of the people living in this region is making and selling GUD and Sugar . Apart from this, there are certain units who are involved in the making of shoes and agricultural equipment's.

Pura Mahadev (Baloni)

Pura Mahadev is located on the main Baghpat – Meerut Highway. It is 30 KM from Baghpat and around 36 KM from Meerut. The sprawling temple compound is situated on the bank of river Hindan, 4.5 KM north of town Baloni in Baghpat District. According to a local myth, a shiv temple was established here by Rishi Parshuram and hence this place was called Shiv Puri. Later however the name of the place changed to Shiv Pura and the place gradually began to be known as Pura Mahadev. People from all around gather here and “Kanwariyas” pay their tribute to lord shiva by pouring holy water of The Ganges on the shivling inside the temple.

Lakshagrah(Barnava)
Spread across an area of 1659 Hectares, Lakshagrah is located at the intersection of Hindon River and Krishna Rivers. The place is around 42 KM from Meerut. It is said that the place was developed in 9th century by the then king Ahirvaran Tomar. Barnava finds a mention in the Varnavarat episode in Mahabharat. In the south of the village, there is a small hill which is almost 100 feet high and is spread in an area of 30 acres. It is believed that these are the remains of the Lakh Mandap. The shrines or darghahs of Budhin Shah and Makhdum Shah are also on this hill. These were built during the second half of the 17th century. Sanskrit inscription on one of the darghahs indicate that these were originally hindu temples.
