The nameDarrang was derived from the Bodo wordDourang, which means'Lilabhumi'(Playground) of Gods. According to Scholar Late Dineswar Sarma, the wordDarrang came fromDawrangwhich means gate, as there was direct entry to Bhutan andfrom there to Nepal, China etc. Gradually this was known asDarrang. Darrang consists of a narrow strip of plain lying between Himalayas and Brahmaputra river in the north-west part of Assam. The land which is now known as Darrang district was included in the Hindu Kingdom of Kamrupa as mentioned in Mahabharata. Its antiquity dates back to the beginning of the sixteenth century when the Koch King NarNarayan incorporated this district in his Kingdom. In 1637, the Ahom Kingdom was established in the land after the death of the then Koch King BaliNarayana. In 1792, Darrang Raja was defeated by an expeditionary force under the command of Captain Welsh and in 1826. Darrang with rest of Assam passed under the British rule. The district in general is considered to be plain. On the north there exist the Udalguri District and mighty Brahmaputra flows along the southern boundary of the district . The main tributaries of Brahmaputra in this district are Barnadi, Nowanai, Mangaldai and Dhansiri. The forests within the district provide good amount of timber to the timber unites. Satras are similar to monasteries and unique about Assam. Satras were conceived & founded by Sankardeva and then by his followers. Temples & Devalaya
Kamakshya Devalaya:To the south-west of Kalaigaon, near Lakhimpur village, is this Devalaya. There is a Stone fetish inside the temple with 8 lotus petals on it. Bar Maszid:Bar Maszid is one of two oldest mosques in the District, and located at the heart of the Mangaldai Town.
Engil Baba's Mazaar:Engil Baba, or Engil Fakeer's Mazaar is located at Kabarstaan (Graveyard). The architecture it is very beautifully constructed. Historic Beels & Ponds
In 1615 AD, Koch Kings took over in Darrang from Bhuyans. It was these two periods where most of these ponds were created. Many large ponds were also created during British rule and post independent period.
