Jabalpur
Located on the banks of the sacred Narmada River and surrounded by rocky hills is the tranquil city of Jabalpur. Nesting amidst rocky mounds, Jabalpur is also called the "the city of the rocks." The city is named after Saint Jabali Pattanam or Jabal (in Arabic meaning rocks). The capital of the medieval Gond rulers during the 12th century, Jabalpur later became the capital of the Kalchuri Kings and the Marathas until the British annexed it. The hub of education and culture, Saint Binoba Bhave called Jabalpur Sanskardhani (Cultural Capital) of Madhya Pradesh. Today Jabalpur is a major centre of administration and commerce. • Madan Mahal Fort: Built by the Gond ruker, Raja Madan Singh in 1116, the fort offers a spectacular view of the countryside. The fort evokes austere style lacking in ostentation.
• Sangram Sagar: Sangram Shah, the Gond ruler built it between 1480 and1540. The Sangram Sagar Lake is home to the red crested pochards, coots, and pin-tailed ducks from central western Asia.
• Rani Durgavati Museum: It offers an insight into the life and times of Queen Durgavati. The museum preserves a collection of sculptures, inscriptions, relics, artifacts and curios and photos of Mahatma Gandhi.
