Junagadh

Major tourist attractions are the two fortifications, one encircling the town of Junagadh and the other surrounding Uparkot in the west. Uparkot fortress was of strategic importance during the Maurya and Gupta reigns and has survived at least 16 sieges. The fort has an elaborately adorned entrance which leads to archeological ruins within the fortification. Kamleshwar Dam

Hills and Mountains
Girnar Hill
Girnar, a scenic mountain range which rises to 3660 ft above the sea level, is the highest peak in Gujarat. Situated on the outskirts of Junagadh, it is also one of the most sacred pilgrimage centers for the Jain community in the state. Girnar is dotted with numerous beautifully carved ancient Jain temples. There is a rock at the foot of the hill, bearing an inscription of Ashoka (2nd century BC). It also sports two other inscriptions, which date back to 150 and 455 AD. Girnar is also famous for the Kathiawadi culture.

Historical Monuments
Adi Chadi Vav
Adi Chadi Vav is a step-well situated at the Uperkot Fort in Junagadh, one of the most picturesque towns in India. Built in the 15th century, the step-well has a spiral staircase and 172 steps.

Rock Edicts of Ashoka
Fourteen Rock Edicts of Emperor Ashoka are seen at Junagadh, in Gujarat, cut into a great rock outside the city. These inscriptions in Pali language ( Brahmi script) date back to 263 BC.

Rudrakama added Sanskrit inscriptions in around 150 AD, and Skandagupta in about 450 AD. The inscriptions came to the notice of the world in 1837. Tomb of Nuri Shah is situated in the Uparkot Fort, which is on the eastern side of Junagadh. The fort, built in the 4th century by Chandragupta, stands on a plateau. The fort is open daily from 07:00 to 18.30 hrs.

Wildlife Sanctuaries
Gir National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary
Established in 1965, Gir National Park and Lion Sanctuary is situated at Sasan Gir, in the south-west of Saurashrea Peninsula, in Junaghad District of Gujarat. The Gir National Park and Lion Sanctuary is collectively known as the Gir Protected Area. It is spread over an area of 130,000 hectares. Rough and steep rocky hillside covered with mixed deciduous forests encircle the park. The park is home to over 300 lions. Popular of the other residents here are leopards, chital, nilgai, chinkara, four horned antelope, wild boar and a variety of birds and reptiles.
