Sonipat
GENERAL
District Sonepat comprises of three sub-divisions namely Ganaur, Sonepat and Gohana and seven blocks (Ganaur,Sonepat ,Rai, Kharkhoda, Gohana, Kathura and Mundlana) has been carved out of Rohtak and made a full fledged District on 22.12.1972.
LOCATION AND EXTENT
District Sonepat has an area of 2,13,080 Hectare. It lies in the south-east of the State of Haryana , North of the Union Territory of the Delhi and is bounded by the Districts of Rohtak, Jind, Panipat. The District shares an inter-state boundry with district Meerut of Uttar Pradesh. HISTORY
It is often believed that Sonipat (now spelt as Sonipat) was one of the five prasthas or towns demanded by Yudhishthira from Duryodhana as the price of peace. Another tradition ascribes its foundation to Raja Soni, thirteenth in descent from Arjuna, a brother of Yudhishthira. Both these traditions are without substance. There is no mention of Sonipat in the Mahabharata although it has been noted much earlier by the great gram-marian Panini in his celebrated Ashtadhyayi. The evidence of its occupa-tion by Yaudheyas is available through the recovery of a large hoard of their coins here in the 11th century A.D.. One Dipal Har was governor of Sonipat and was defeated by Sultan Masud of Ghazni in A.D. 1037 when he marched through the Punjab in an attempt to expand his empire in Hindustan

Bharat Steel Tubes Limited at Ganaur produces steel tubes and pipes. Sonipat Cooperative Sugar Mills is engaged in the production of sugar. Haryana Brewer-ies Limited, Electric Construction and Equip-ment Company Limited, Hindustan Everest Tools Limited. Rubber Reclaim Company of India (Pvt.) Limited, Maco (Pvt.) Limited and Haryana Agro Food Processing Plant are some of the other large-scale units at and near to Sonipat.
