West Khasi Hills
West Khasi Hill District is sandwiched between East Khasi Hills and East Garo Hills Districts. It is somewhat a centrally located District of Meghalaya. The District covers an area of about 5,247 Sq Kms and has a population of about 2,94,000. Nongstoin is the District HQrs, while Mairang and Mawkyrwat are the two Civil Sub-Divisions of the district. People living in this District are mostly Khasis . Their favourite traditional festival is ”Shad Suk Mynsiem” (dance of a joyful heart) which is generally celebrated during April each year. However, coal mining is also carried out at a minor scale at Maweit and Rambrai. Besides coal mines, the District is also blessed with Uranium which was discovered at Domiasiat which is about 65 Kms away from Nongstoin.
Like other Districts of Meghalaya, West Khasi Hills has a number of places of historical and tourist importance. Near Nongum village, about 65 Kms from Nongstoin, there is a big dome of solid granite rock called “ Kyllang Rock”. At Jakrem village, about 58 Kms from Nongstoin, there is a mineral water hot spring. Between Mawduh and Byrki villages there is a river island called " Nongkhnum Island which is 18 Kms away from Nongstoin with an area of about 25 Sq Kms. The Island has two waterfalls namely “Kshaid ThumThum” and “ Kshaid Wynnia”. A religious festival is celebrated every year around March or April at Nolikata village which is about 160 Kms from Nongstoin, in which thousands of people from Bangladesh also take part. Tourism Spots
Ranikor, about 169 kms from Nongstoin and 129 kms to Shillong is one of the best fishing spots. Ding Ding Kohlangat
Ding Ding Kohlangat falls, and the blue river pools of Wah Rilang near Mawranglang, 8 kms down from Mawkyrwat is a scenic beauty, for many to see and appreciate.
Mawthadraishan peak
which takes an hour and a half to reach from the main road, is located on the northern side of Nongstoin - Shillong road, near Nongshillong, Mawroh and Markasa villages. Nongkhnum river Island:
-A couple of hours trek from Nongstoin is the hitherto little-known river island on the Kynshi known as Nongkhnum. It is in the form of a Plateau with an area of about 25 Sq.kms. The island is form due to the divergence of the river Kynshi near Diangsyiang and Diligim villages, fo rming the northern stream called Namliang and the southern stream called Phanliang. The island in endowed with beautiful perennial falls namely Weinia fall in the northern side, Kshaid Thum fall in the southern side and Langshiang fall on the western side. Thum falls
Thum falls on the river Kynshi which is about 60 metres high and situated near Dilingim village offers a wonderful sight. At the base is a beautiful pool surrounded by hard rocks on three sides.
Weinia falls
Weinia falls on the same river Kynshi and quite near to the Thum falls is another scenic cascade. Langshiang falls

Jakrem Hot Spring,

Kyllang Rock
Kyllang Rock which is made of a single, huge solid igneous rock is situated at Mawnai about 10 kms from Mairang, the sub-divisional Head Quarter. Experience India with Indian Travel Agent. Folklore has it that the rock possesses a sort of magnetic field since, so far, no one has ever fallen off the slope of the huge rock. It can be developed into a good rock-climbing site. |
