Maharajas of Bikaner and Jodhpur requested the Karni Mata to lay the foundation of the Bikaner Fort. As the incarnation of the warrior goddess Durga, Karni Mata is worshipped by her followers. The most famous to be noticed in the temple are the white rats. These white rats are treated as sacred and are worshipped, given food and protection in the temple.
